Our Story
In the late 1980s, as the country was reeling from the Savings and Loan crisis, Dan Ortega saw an opportunity in the vacant homes that dotted the landscape, and not just for himself. He saw an opportunity that benefited the home owner at no cost, while providing professional people with the opportunity to live in fine homes at a fraction of the cost .
During the past 25 years, Showhomes of Atlanta, formerly Showhomes of America, has assisted in the sale of thousands of houses from coast to coast by making it possible for homeowners to utilize a service that has been referred to as; ‘genius!’ ‘brilliant!’ ‘win, win, win!’ to help sell their vacant homes. Homeowners have been able to breathe a sigh of relief because their homes were secure, staged with beautiful furnishings, their utilities paid, their lawns manicured and their pools maintained virtually free , while their home was on the market for sale.
Today this family-owned and operated company is one of the premier vacant home marketing companies in Atlanta. The company has been steadily growing as a result of the high demand created by the recent housing market conditions, nearly doubling in number of homes under management since 2006. And with the number of vacant homes continuing to climb, Ortega is predicting his 25-year-old company will continue to grow, not just in the metro Atlanta area, but across the country.
The level of service Showhomes provides and its reputation means that more and more homeowners are seeking out Showhomes of Atlanta to help with the sale of their vacant home.
Showhomes of Atlanta connects highly qualified home managers with vacant homes in and around metro Atlanta. The home manager, at no cost to the homeowner or the Realtor, stages the home with their own furniture, maintains the property - including landscaping and general upkeep - and pays the utility bills.
Statistics bear out that ‘staged’ homes sell more quickly than vacant homes.
Dan Ortega developed this model in 1986. He moved from Oklahoma City, Ok. to Atlanta for a single client who had a number of vacant homes. Ortega grew that company into a national powerhouse, selling franchises across the country until he sold it in 2004, though he retained the Atlanta market.
Today, Showhomes of Atlanta regularly manages almost 100 properties ranging from $300,000 to $4 million. The company manages condos, mansions, starter homes and everything in between.
The Ortega family are certain they are helping many of the people who are managing their properties as well as the homeowners. In one case, a home manager moved to Atlanta for a new job but was laid off as a result of the economy. She lost her house and didn’t want to move into an apartment with a school-aged child. Showhomes of Atlanta helped her maintain her dignity by getting her into a true home, in a great school district at a fraction of what a mortgage would cost. The whole episode turned out to be a heartfelt experience for everyone invlolved.
On the other side of the coin, home sellers who have been forced to leave their homes for whatever reason find their homes selling more quickly because the homes are clean, well-staged and show ready at all times.
Recently the company was divided up into three main territories in order to provide more concentrated focus by more people in response to the growth in numbers. The three divisions are operated by in the east by Dan’s son Jonathan and his wife Kristy Ortega in an area that includes Virginia Highlands, Brookheaven, parts of Midtown and Buckhead and Gwinnett County, Dan’s daughters Shalom McGoffin and Tara Wilkes and Tara’s husband Tommy Wilkes cover most of Buckhead, parts of Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, The Vinings and West Atlanta’ while Derrell and Michelle Moore cover portions of Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, East Cobb, North Fulton, and Hall County.
Derrell and Michelle joined the Atlanta operation in 2007 after having operated a very successful franchise operation in Jacksonville, Fl. They have made significant contributions to the overall growth and success of the Atlanta office in the past four years.
